University of Iowa News Release

A museum of art director who has overseen multi-million renovations of two San Francisco Bay museums will be the guest speaker for a public lecture at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, in the University Athletic Club, 1360 Melrose Ave. in Iowa City.

Lori Fogarty, executive director of the Oakland Museum of California, is the speaker for the Art and Museum Education Speaker Series hosted by the University of Iowa Museum of Art. The lecture, sponsored by UIMA volunteer docents and Mary Westbrook, is free and open to the public.

Since becoming director of the Oakland Museum of California in 2006, Fogarty has been leading $62 million renovation and expansion of its facilities. Prior to working for the Oakland Museum, Fogarty oversaw a $19.5 million fund-raising campaign and expansion project at the Bay Area Discovery Museum in Sausalito.

Fogarty says that Oakland renovation is not just about the art works. “We are also focusing on the experience of our visitors,” she says. “How they learn in different ways, what they want to do when they're at the Museum, and how we can meet their interests and needs.”
