First Friday: April 2017 Creature Comforts

  • 5:00 PM–7:00 PM

118 E. College St., Iowa City

Party for art at the next University of Iowa Museum of Art (UIMA) First Friday reception at FilmScene! UIMA First Fridays provide an ideal chance to usher in your weekend, enjoy the work of local artists, and mingle with other art-enthusiasts.

This month we are featuring Rachel Marie-Crane Williams, whose work as a painter is based on the ephemera of her everyday experiences. She mixes images from the animal world with bits and pieces from the suburban domestic world. Williams' work has elements of collage, aqueous media, drawing and painting. Most pieces take months to complete and depend on a careful process of layering on paper that correlates to the experiences in her life.

Rachel Marie-Crane Williams earned an M.F.A in Studio Art and a Ph.D. in Art Education from Florida State University. She has been employed for many years as an Associate Professor at The University of Iowa in the Gender, Women’s and Sexuality Studies (GWSS) Department and in the School of Art and Art History. Currently she is the Department Executive Officer of GWSS. Her scholarship related to incarcerated women, comics, qualitative research, and visual art has been published in the Journal of Arts Law and Management, Visual Arts Research, Studies in Art Education, Southern Cultures, the International Journal of Comics Art, the Journal of Art Education, and the Journal of Poetry Therapy. She has received funding for her work in the arts and humanities from the National Art Education Association, the Roy J. Carver Foundation, the Iowa Arts Council, The Hull House Museum in Chicago, and Humanities Iowa. She is currently working on a graphic manuscript about the 1943 riot in Detroit.

First Fridays are free and open to the public with complimentary popcorn and a cash bar.
