First Friday: April 2018

  • 5:00 PM–7:00 PM

Party for art at the next University of Iowa Museum of Art (UIMA) First Friday reception at FilmScene! UIMA First Fridays provide an ideal chance to usher in your weekend, enjoy the work of local artists, and mingle with other art-enthusiasts.

The April First Friday event will present the recent works of Greta Songe. She will show a series of drawings and digital designs surrounding the theme Accumulation, in addition to other recent drawings, design, and illustration work.

Songe writes, "The stunning beauty of scores of white pelicans gathering in the Iowa River captivates me on my morning commute. Massive heaps of trees on the roadside removed by the quick hand of an excavator evoke a sense of loss. The nightly scooping-up of countless toy trucks and cars around the house reminds me of the fun of the day and feels like an inescapable chore awarded to parents of small children. At the same time each year, I count on witnessing hundreds of grasshoppers springing into action as I make my way along my usual running path. The accumulation of these small moments adds up."

Greta Songe is a native of South Louisiana and a resident of Coralville, Iowa. She graduated from The University of Iowa in 2004 with an MFA in Painting and Drawing. She is an Assistant Professor of Art at Kirkwood Community College where she teaches Design Fundamentals, Drawing, Printmaking, and Digital Art.

First Fridays are free and open to the public with complimentary popcorn and a cash bar.

Consider becoming a UIMA member! Courtesies include home delivery of the UIMA Magazine and a personalized Membership Card, which entitles you to free entry to the Figge Art Museum and reciprocal admission to other art museums around the country.

First Fridays for the 2017-2018 season are generously sponsored by John S. & Patricia C. Koza, H. Dee & Myrene R. Hoover, and John R. Menninger.
