"Watercolors: Nature's Design"

Party for art at the next University of Iowa Museum of Art (UIMA) First Friday reception at FilmScene! UIMA First Fridays provide an ideal chance to usher in your weekend, enjoy the work of local artists, and mingle with other art-enthusiasts.

This month we are featuring Barbara Weets. Her watercolors are inspirations from the environment. They reflect her love for nature—the flora, fauna, peacefulness, and serenity she finds there. Her style, which is a non-traditional, intuitive use of watercolor, allows her to express her perceptions of nature with bright, vivid colors.  Her paintings are often described as enchanting, mysterious, tranquil, and fresh—paintings that make you feel good.

Weets grew up on a farm near Mechanicsville, graduating from Kirkwood Community College as a legal secretary in 1973.  She lived in Cedar Rapids for many years, working as the Linn County Sheriff's Secretary. Weets continued her education at the University of Montana and at the University of Iowa, receiving a BFA in Painting and Design.  Following graduation her work was included in multiple juried exhibitions, and has been published worldwide in the form of notecards, calendars, books, and magazines. Weets is actively producing and publishing her own work in the form of notecards and giclée prints, working with Richard Sjolund of Wilderness Studio.  Recent works are available at the Iowa Artisans Gallery in Iowa City and Brick House Gallery in Mt. Vernon, as well as from her studio. Weets currently lives on the family farm where she grew up and has worked twenty-five years as an office manager at the Hayek, Moreland, Smith & Bergus Law firm in Iowa City. She feels fortunate to retain a following of print collectors and the ability to continue to do the thing she loves best.

First Fridays are free and open to the public with complimentary popcorn and a cash bar.
