First Friday: November 2015

Party for art at the next University of Iowa Museum of Art (UIMA) First Friday reception on November 6, 5:00–7:00 p.m., at FilmScene! UIMA First Fridays provide an ideal chance to usher in your weekend, enjoy the work of Paintallica, and mingle with other art-enthusiasts. Paintallica will be presented as part of the Witching Hour Festival in Iowa City.

Paintallica is a collaborative group of artists that creates site-specific installations using wood, paint, blowtorches, chainsaws, and anything that reflects their working-class backgrounds. The artists met as graduate students at the University of Iowa, meeting regularly to criticize each other’s work.

The New York Times describes Paintallica’s work as, “an intuitive, stream-of-conscious approach to creating assemblage art.” While describing their creative process, Paintallica member Dan Attoe said, “We tend to push each other’s buttons, and we roughhouse a lot… The willingness of the artists to pain over and destroy each other’s work prevents members from becoming attached to their art. Through this, Paintallica may grow as a group.”

The group will begin creating their installation in the FilmScene gallery space the morning of November 6 and continuing to November 7.  Guests will be able to observe the creation of the installation from the hallway outside the gallery. First Fridays are free and open to the public.

First Fridays for the 2015-2016 season are generously sponsored by FilmScene, H. Dee & Myrene Hoover, and John Menninger.
