Art Of The Day
Happy Birthday, Maurice Brazil Prendergast!
Born on this day in 1858, the artist’s early training was in industrial and mechanical drawing through the public school system, supplemented by studies at one of several Free Evening Drawing Schools operating in Boston during the 1870s. As a teenager, Prendergast hand- lettered signs for shops and stores. In 1891, Prendergast continued his artistic education in Paris. There, he was inspired by the exquisite fashions, meandering cobblestoned streets, and café culture. Though he continued to travel to Europe throughout his adult life, Prendergast ultimately returned to Boston in 1894. He primarily exhibited with The Eight, an association of artists formed to protest the conservative exhibition policies of the National Academy of Design.
A Post-Impressionist, Prendergast consistently created works that have been described as resembling mosaics or tapestries due to the flattened, simplified forms and pattern-like compositional arrangements. Prendergast was known for producing colorful, leisurely scenes of everyday people enjoying parks or beaches, such as this work in the UIMA permanent collection.
