Follow Her Lead: Womanhood in African and Diasporic Arts

Through a focus on themes of leadership, fashion, motherhood, and transformation, this exhibition highlights artworks created by, for, and about women. Two important recent acquisitions take center stage: a highly elaborate bridal ensemble from southeast Morocco signals a history of global trade and a resistance to French colonial occupation, and Simone Leigh's elegant 103 (Face Jug Series) recalls face jugs [not on view] created by slaves in the Edgefield District of South Carolina in the early 1860s. In the gallery, it forms an immediate dialogue with women's pottery from the African collection. These and many other objects in Follow Her Lead center the artistic and performative aspects of womanhood in Global Africa.
