Vin Ordinaries Chatel du Roy, 1957

Collage and oil on canvas

Lil Picard Collection, University of Iowa Museum of Art   697.1999

The title of this painting combines Picard’s note “Vin Ordinaries”—in English “an ordinary wine”—with “Chatel du Roy”, the name of the wine taken from the collaged label in the work. Chatel du Roy translates to Chattels of the King—chattel meaning property. The composition appears to be two figures dancing—perhaps part of a narrative about a night out on the town. Yet the wordplay and use of the color red suggests turmoil.
