Lil Picard Collection, University of Iowa Museum of Art   680.1999

After attending a forum at New York University related to the “16 Americans” show at MoMA, Picard wrote in her diary about Robert Rauschenberg’s process using all materials and his surroundings to make his work: “I agree with him. I like to use not only everything also air, spit, noise, dirt, speech in my work, if I could. And me—waiting to be accepted in a lousy group-up-town show. Heartbreaking struggle for a little success—but—I’d rather do that than anything else!” Diary entry, 1971, Lil Picard Papers
