Meet Laurie Zaiger

Tell us about yourself:

I grew up in Iowa City in the 1950s and 60s and was always making.   I taught high school art at City High School and Mount Vernon High School and supervised and taught art education student teachers.  I am now an artist, community volunteer, a grandmother, a learner, and a traveler.

What inspired you to become a Stanley docent?

As a child, my mother often took us to the old art building to check out the art on the grounds and in the hallways, classrooms, and the checkered space.  Coming face to face with a sculpture, a drawing or painting in person was expanding, exciting, and profound.  I want to be part of welcoming anyone and everyone into the Stanley Museum of Art so they can have the experience of art in person and want to return again and again.

What are you looking forward to in the new building?

I can’t wait to again meet the Stanley Museum’s art works from their permanent collections; I have missed seeing them.  I am excited that the art museum is in the heart of Iowa City and will offer beautiful spaces inside and out to not only showcase works from the outstanding collections but also new and thought provoking art.  I look forward to being a part of the gatherings that will build connections and communities with works, people, and experiences available to us all.
