A photo of Kate Malkusak--she stands, smiling, in front of the mural in the Stanley Museum of Art lobby.

Explain your experience working for the Stanley:

My experience at the Stanley has been short, but so educational. I learned a new appreciation and understanding of art, both in our galleries and in general. I have loved the supportive and amazing staff I get to work with, and am sad to only have had this one year with everyone here :(

How did your involvement at the Stanley compliment your studies?

The main way the Stanley has complemented my studies came about this last semester. One of my majors is Spanish, and my class for this semester was focused on Spanish art throughout history. For this class, we were able to come to the Stanley and have special works pulled that were by famous Spanish artists like Miro, Picasso, and Goya. This was an enlightening experience and changed the way in which I could study these artists.

What was your favorite moment or part of working at the Stanley?

One day, there was a particularly large elementary school tour going around the galleries. The security guards asked one of us Gallery Hosts to go upstairs to help with the kids, so I got to follow along with the kids on the tour and see the art through their eyes.

Where are you headed next?

I am moving to DC!

What will you miss most about Iowa?

I'm going to miss the people most when I leave Iowa. The campus being a part of the city really helps to foster this sense of a community, even with such a large university. Everyone is always so nice and generous; I think I will miss that once I move to a bigger city.
