Night At The Museum: Wikipedia Edit-a-thon

This March, we're doing something a little different.

For our next installment of Nights at the Museum—a series of events for UI students that occur monthly on Thursday nights, when the Stanley is open late--we're running a month long Wikipedia Edit-a-thon in partnership with Art Hawks and LGBTQ Iowa Archives & Library in recognition of Women's History Month.

This event has both synchronous and asynchronous elements. Use the provided materials any time to make edits to Wikipedia pages on your schedule. Or, join us at the Stanley Museum of Art on Thursday, March 7, from 5–7 p.m. for an in-person editing event!

Wikipedia is the largest encyclopedia in the world, and anyone can edit it—yet a 2011 Wikimedia study found that less than 10 percent of Wikipedia editors are women, and only 19 percent of biographies are about women. The goal of this event and the global movement is to amplify the work of cis and trans women, non-binary people, and Black, Indigenous, and people of color by giving them due coverage on Wikipedia. Our Edit-a-thon specifically is focused on artists in the Stanley Museum of Art's collections.

Event attendees will have the option to edit Wikipedia; make their own pinback buttons; do a scavenger hunt in the museum's galleries; and share snacks with likeminded people! No prior Wikipedia experience necessary; bring your laptop/ charger and we’ll provide tutorials and resources on the steps to becoming a Wikipedian. Prior to the event, please create a Wikipedia account- you can visit our campaign dashboard to request one.
