Using Our Archives for Artist Research; A practical guide to Museum and Special Collections archives in research-creation practices.

Join us for an informative lecture and workshop with Melanie Landsittel, Graduate Assistant at the Stanley Museum of Art, on Friday, 10/25, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., in the Visual Classroom on the 3rd floor.

Melanie will do a deep-dive into “Research-Creation” as it has applied to artists in Canada requesting government funding for their scholarship, explaining its framing of artist work, and possibility for application to student research. She will give practical information about how to access, and most importantly browse museum and special collections databases at the University of Iowa, for students interested in working with primary source materials in the reading rooms of both institutions. The session will be composed of both a lecture and workshop element focused on developing lines of inquiry for student research.

Lecture will coincide with a pop-up from Special Collections, where books from Szathmary Collection of Culinary Manuscripts will be pulled for student viewing (11 a.m.–1 p.m.), as well as an exhibition of works from the SMA Collection curated by Landsittel titled, “Without Work There is No Kolach.”

Visual Arts and Center for the Book graduate and undergraduate students are encouraged to attend!

No RSVP necessary.
