Stanley Student Challenge
What is the Stanley Student Challenge?
In an attempt to get more students involved and engaged with the events and activities happening at the Stanley Museum of Art, we are inviting any and all University of Iowa students (graduate or undergraduate) to undertake the Stanley Student Challenge.
Those interested in participating will receive a punch card, detailing the semester's schedule of student-focused programs. Students should attend at least three of the listed events on the card throughout the semester, getting their card stamped at the front desk for each one.
During finals week, students will be able to turn in their stamped cards for a prize: custom SMA merch!

What events count towards the challenge?
In order to successfully complete the Stanley Student Challenge, students must get at least three stamps on their challenge card. The challenge resets each semester--stop back in the spring for a new challenge card and another chance at a prize.
Below, you will find a list of the student-specific events on the card. These Night at the Museum events were developed in conjunction with the AY24/25 Campus Engagement Coordinator, Annelies Knight.
In addition to the events listed, students may also attend general/ public programs (a full calendar of events can be found here) and/or visit the Stanley on their own time to receive a stamp.
Fall Challenge Events
September 12, 2024 - 5 pm - The Art of Voting
Join us for the first installment of Night at the Museum for this academic year—a series of monthly events for students that occur on Thursday nights, when the museum is open late.
This month, in honor of National Voter Registration Day (September 17), the Stanley is helping students learn about voter registration and civic engagement! Members of UI student org Hawk the Vote will be present to register students to vote and talk about the value of participating in elections at all levels: federal, state, and local.
Because art has played a significant role in voting history, the Stanley has also prepared some politically inspired block prints for students to use with the assistance of our staff. BYO fabric goods (t-shirts, tote bags, scraps that can be used as fabric patches) to be printed on! We will also have totes, pencil bags, and fabric patches, but our supply is limited. Snacks will be provided.
For more information, visit the event listing.
October 10, 2024 - 5 pm - Cyanotype Printing
Join us for the second installment of Night at the Museum for this academic year — a series of monthly events for UI students that occur on Thursday nights, when the museum is open late.
This month, we are focusing on cyanotypes! Broadly, cyanotype is a photographic printmaking process, most known for its distinctive blue hues. We'll be making the simplest variation of a cyanotype: a photogram. Photograms are made by arranging opaque or translucent items onto sensitized paper, which is then exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light. Whatever items are placed on the paper will block the UV rays; where the light hits, the paper will stay blue, while areas blocked by your materials will remain white.
We will have materials (sensitized cyanotype paper, UV lamps, and objects that can be used to make photograms) for students to use with the assistance of our staff. You are welcomed and encouraged to BYO materials if you have something you think would make a great photogram--lace, leaves, jewelry, or other opaque or translucent materials work best. Snacks will be provided.
Can't make it Thursday night? Materials will also be provided in take-home bags with instructions for students wishing to make their cyanotype photograms at home (no UV lamp needed — the sun works just as well!).

November 14, 2024 - 5 pm - Stress-Relief Patchworking
Join us for another installment of Night at the Museum, a series of monthly events for UI students that occurs on Thursday nights, when the museum is open late.
This month we want to give students an opportunity to take a break and relax by making personalized patchwork art! De-stress by making any design you like, while grabbing a warm drink and some seasonal treats.
We will be providing fabric patches and sewing supplies along with tote bags and pencil bags for students to sew their designs on. You are also welcomed to bring your own cloth goods to sew on—tote bags, t-shirts, sweaters, or any other cloth good! Don’t know how to sew? We will also be providing easy sewing instructions!
For more information, visit the event listing.

Spring Challenge Events
February 11 - 14, 2025 - A Week of HeARTs
This month, we're celebrating Valentine's Day for a whole week! We're giving students the chance to show what artworks they love in our galleries, as well as the opportunity to make their own art. All week, we'll have paper hearts available at the front desk for students to leave on the floor in front of their favorite artworks--show other visitors what your favorite work is, and see what other people love, too!
We will also have a special Valentine's Day scavenger hunt for you to complete with your valentine (or palentine!) and a limited number of grab-and-go DIY valentine card kits.
For more information, visit the event listing.
March 13, 2025 - 5 pm - Girls' Night
In honor of Women’s History Month, we're hosting a collage night! We will provide copies of historical materials to pick through, along with journals to work in. If you're already an avid journaler (or junk-journaler), you are welcomed to bring your own journal or paper goods you would like to work on!
Students are welcome to grab a snack, make a collage and listen to some fun girl-y music, or head up into the galleries and keep an eye out for work by women artists!
For more information, visit the event listing.
April 17, 2025 - 5 pm - Student Exhibit
This month we want to celebrate our student artists! Working with student artists across the University and the Undergraduate Art History Society, we have created our very own student gallery—gallery guide and all! Students are welcome to come in, grab a snack, and see what their peers have created.
Interested in submitting a piece to this show? Apply using this Qualtrics form. Applications will be accepted through Sunday, March 2, 2025, 11:59 pm.
